All About Dog Snoring

The secret is out...dogs snore. More and more dog owners (or dog slaves, depending on your point of view) allow their dogs to sleep in their bedsfor various reasons, so dog snoring has come out of the kennel closet and into our ears. Dogs snore for the exact same reason as people snore - something is blocking their upper airways. Snoring is not the worst thing that could happen to your dog, but it can be bothersome. No need to loose any more sleep than you have to. Here's what you need to know:
Why Dogs Snore
Again, as with humans, dogs snore for the same reasons people do. Here are the most common culprits:
- Being Overweight: If you can't detect any waist on your dog when looking down at him or her from above, then your dog is overweight. Extra tissue and flabby tissue can push the upper airways closed.
- Nasal Congestion: Does your dog have any kind of cold, allergies or nasal discharge? Mucus will definitely cause snoring by plugging up airways and will usually decrease when the dog's nose clears up.
- Use of Tranquilizers: Being on any pain reduction or anti-contestant medicines will relax your dog's muscles to the point that they press and partially block his airwaves. Try not to let your dog drink alcohol, no matter how funny your friends think it is.
- Having a Flat Face: That cuteness comes with a price. Breeds like Pekinese, Pugs and Boston Terriers often have more nasal infections and easier blocked airways than longer nosed breeds. Consequentially, they almost always snore.
- Somebody Living With the Dog Smokes: Despite the popularity of poker playing dog paintings, dogs actually do not smoke. Humans do. Tobacco smoke is a big irritant. It's not fair to expect your dog to stop snoring if he or she has to live with a smoker.
What To Do
My dog snores whenever she gets onto her back, with her paws sticking up in the air. Getting your dog to change her position can greatly reduce snoring. Many vets recommend getting your dog a round doggy bed that makes the curl up, and therefore snore less.
If your dog is allergy prone, try to take his walk when the pollen and pollution counts are lowest, at times when there's the least amount of traffic.
When To Get The Vet
If you're having trouble getting Doggy to stick to a diet, the vet can recommend special food and tips.
If your dog suddenly starts snoring when he or she has had no previous snoring history, get your vet to look at that nose. Very rarely can snoring be a sign or tumors or cysts, but they do happen to the best of dogs.
If Doggy seems to be gasping when sleeping, the vet must see your dog.
If Doggy wheezes and seems to have trouble breathing when awake, that's a neon sign for vet care.
If none of these tips have helped and the dog STILL snores very loudly, time to go to the vet's.
When All Else Fails
Separate bedrooms have saved many a marriage, and it may be necessary for you and the dog to sleep apart. Your dog will still love you, even if you do have to sleep in separate beds.

Don't worry. My pit snored at 6 weeks old! Pits are not necessarily flat nose but they do have a shorter snout. It's pretty common in pits. You would basically have to get used to it. Although she doesnt snore when she is curled up.
I had a Boston Terrier named Slade and he would snore every time he went to sleep. I now have a Boxer named Joda and she also snores, but i don't mine the noise lol. Joda also tends to dream a lot, she'll bark and growl in her sleep, I've had dogs that dream before but never this much. I also have a Pit Bull named Bowser, very rarely will he snore.
i have a staffy cross bull mastife cross boxer who snores but it is very loud and it will stop 4 a bit and start a gain is she sick
I have a dog that snores too, although it is not too loud so that is a good thing. But he has no problem falling asleep and letting it go...
I am a writer and as I am sitting here right now, everything nice and quiet and me trying to focus on the book that I am writing, my dog (labrador mix) is lying next to me and is snoring sooo loud. I have a 3 yr old Pit, and she snores ALL the time, and it's really loud. Most of the time I laugh at her, but it's really not cool at 3 and 4 in the morning. If I kick her out of my room she'll sit at the door and scratch it until I let her back in. She also snorts like a pig when she's sniffing outside or cleaning herself, her nickname is miss piggy and she comes to that just as well as her real name...lol
My big baby Big Boy is a 10 month old pit and he snores. He sleeps in the bed with my husband and I on his back with his legs straight up in the air and snores his head off. It's so cute! For some reason his snoring doesn't bother me but when my husband does I can't sleep. My puppy snores louder than I have ever heard!!

and she snores. (She's a few pounds overweight, but not obese). My husband has sleep apnea. When he isn't wearing his mask and she's sleeping beside him it's horrendous! She is a mini-version of my hubby when she sleeps. I have to wake her up in order to get to sleep myself. It's funny sometimes. I have a pomeranian whos 2 year old and im afraidthat she may have breathing problems because she makes somewhat of a wheezing noise when she falls asleep in my lap(i can really hear her) but. I cant feel anything in her chest so maybe its snoring?

Is there such a thing as DOGGY SLEEP APNEA?? That`s what I keep trying to convince my boyfriend his dog is suffering from... As common as it is for pittbulls to snore, ours is 11, almost 12 years old now, and sometimes I worry. Being a senior citizen and all, our Memphis sleeps ALOT, and sometimes pauses for bit between snores, then usually chokes a little going into the next honker. My golden Retriever wags snores worse than my father and we can hear him from 2 floors up. He only snores when he lies on his sides, and he does hav allergies but he snore ALL the time! We didn't think it was that serious so we left it alone. He has hurt knees so he is kinda overwieght. is that why?

You think your small dogs snore loud???? My 150 lbs great Dane s'mores so loud we hear him downstairs. He almost always sleeps on his back. Barret can literally suck the paint off our walls :( I usually shift the position of his head but this temporary fix only last 1-2 mins. He snores louder than any human I've ever heard. HELP! We are exhausted and I'm sure barret is too. Also we have another great Dane that's bigger and he never snores. Lol what gives?
I have a an American Eskimo/Poodle mix who snores every night... and LOUDLY. It sounds like an intermittent lawn mower noise (a lot louder than the weimy in the video).
The snoring is less offensive than the blanket hogging. Anybody else have a dog who MUST be on the most crucial part of the blanket at all times? Silly Lars.

My 3 month old Pit Bull Puppy Will snores. So, we make sure that he's laying flat. He's not overweight. He weighs 29 lbs. He doesn't have a flat nose. What can we do?
